Night was falling. The falling black enveloped the dark sky. There were still some brighter stars visible from the planet surface. A gaping hole in the Darkday’s hull allowed the matt black sky to be visible. A strong gale was blowing outside.
The remnants of Kronus Alpha huddled together around the heater, in the centre of the room. A weary gunner, Peter, stood guard at the only entrance to the room. The room used to be the commander’s quarters, but it was the perfect impromptu base. The Generator, atop its moving table, had been shifted into the room, to be guarded better and also to allow Johan to fix it when he was awake.
Leon, a melee specialist, was donning his armour to prepare for his shift, when a bright white spectral passed overhead the breach. Peter loaded his heavy flamer while Kara took out her sniper laser rifle. The white light appeared again, this time, closer and more appeared. Arteloc lifted the focus staff given to him and wore his rune emblazoned cloak.
‘They must be scouts… Owen, get that missile launcher out. Wait for my signal.’ Muttering the order under his breath, Nova unslung his plasma assault rifle and loaded in a full clip.
The rest of the twelve armed themselves silently. Johan took out two laser bunch gloves and continued work on the Generator. Alicia, their medic, loaded her flaming katana with a full fuel cell and kept it humming silently on standby. The other four took out their standard issue laser rifles and one unsheathed two deadly diamond edged long knives. They were armed and ready.
Light shone from down the empty corridor. A metallic figure moved stealthily towards the room. The three metre tall figure was a bright silver in colour. A sharp blade half a metre long protruded from each arm where hands should be. Two more appeared behind it. They looked humanoid. But in the entire slivery construct, the eyes gleamed red.
Suddenly, they disappeared.
‘Spread out men. You four, guard the door. First impressions count and I intend to show them no matter how inferior we humans are, we are not to be trifled with!’
As the echoes of Captain Nova died away, the first one appeared next to the guard closest to the door with a laser rifle. Within a split second, it brought down the two blades it wielded and sliced the guard in three vertical parts. The blades ripped open the body and using its mouth, the creature drained up the blood of its fallen prey.
At this point, the other two appeared and did the same to the other three guards. The one with the knives chipped off part of the metallic armour encasing the appiration, before meeting the gory fate that had befallen upon the other three before him.
‘LET LOOSE ALL WEAPONS!’
Before the scream even finished Nova fired a shot into the face of the first beast, melting the beast and felling it instantly. A missile struck the next creature squarely in the chest, blowing it to smithereens. The final creature was set a flame by Peter and the survivors stood back, as the beast writhed and collapsed.
‘What were those things? I mean Captain Nova, it was just so… weird. Like it was not really alive.’
‘Drop it Arteloc. More would come soon. Get some rest…It maybe our last.’
